This series is rooted in the southern gothic theme of nostalgia. I am most inspired by the intense beauty found in the historic architecture of the American South. The series also explores the connection between the past and the “burning series” depicts a break of both the literal picture plane and the temporal plane by incorporating historic imagery with present-day imagery of historic architecture that has seen the effects of time. The technique of burning through the canvas creates the optical paradox of having imagery appear to be in the foreground while actually being located behind the painting, which emphasizes the bizarre nature of time and space in the form of an artistic “time warp.” The “memory” series is mean to illustrate how architecture holds the ghosts of the past, both happy and sad.
